Astronomy Program - 01-AstronomyProgram

Join the Shoreline Amateur Astronomical Association (SAAA) for an astronomy presentation in the Nature Center, followed by observatory and telescope viewing of the night sky (weather/cloud cover permitting).

James Webb Telescope Update: Since its launch just over three years ago, the James Webb Telescope has been making exciting and amazing discoveries about our universe. These findings are continuously evolving, increasing our knowledge of the cosmos and our place within it. This presentation will provide a brief history of the space observatory and explain how it gathers and transmits information.

Winter Birding Field Trip - Part 1: Winter Waterfowl
Bird Pigeon Lake and the Lake Michigan Shoreline in search of winter waterfowl. Finish off at lunch time by viewing birds at the Hemlock Crossing Nature Center feeders.

Whether you’re learning about a specific mineral or the formation of an entire landscape, this program is bound to be engaging for all! This program can take the form of either an indoor presentation, outdoor hike, or a combination of both.

Check-in at the rental counter inside the Lodge upon arrival. Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in, or 30 minutes early if you need to rent equipment. Classes last about 1½ hours.
You must either provide your own or rent equipment at the Pigeon Creek Lodge if needed: selection may be limited on busy days.
Please dress in layers (warm hat and gloves are very important), and let us know if your plans change and you need to cancel.
Ski classes will be canceled if there is not enough snow or if conditions are unsafe. If we know in advance that the class will be canceled, you will be notified by phone or email. If conditions become unsatisfactory the day of the class, the instructor may cancel the class at the last minute. If conditions are questionable, you can check the ski conditions website at miottawa.org/trails

Spring Break Camp

Spring Break Camp - SpringBreakCamp

Experience the outdoors at Ottawa County Parks’ Spring Break Camp! Perfect for young explorers aged 6-14, this camp offers a week packed with exciting outdoor activities and hands-on learning that will spark curiosity and foster a love for nature. Each day brings new discoveries, from examining tiny microorganisms in the creek to spotting majestic bald eagles soaring above. Campers will dive into a week of outdoor adventures—emerging as budding wildlife experts.

This year’s Spring Break Camp will take place at Hager Park, a popular 104-acre destination. The park features trails through a mature hardwood forest, well known for its display of vibrant wildflowers every April and May.

(Ages 6-14). *After-care from 5:30-6 pm available for additional cost ($15)
*Sibling discounts can be applied at checkout, offering a 10% discount for each additional sibling after the first child.

Monday - Imagine you're a bird! How would your feathers help you survive, what special shape would your beak need to eat your favorite food, and where would you build your nest to stay safe and comfortable? Let’s soar into Spring Break!

Tuesday - Step into the role of a plant explorer for the day! Discover the qualities that make a plant useful, beautiful, or native. We'll connect our findings to different crafts, scavenger hunts and games we play throughout the day.

Wednesday - Grab your magnifying glasses and get ready to uncover the tiny wonders all around us! We’ll explore insect’s secret lives, discover their favorite snacks, and learn how these tiny heroes help keep our planet buzzing and blooming.

Thursday - Picture yourself as a tiny grain of sand or a resilient rock! How did you get to where you are today? Were you carried by a glacier, shaped by the wind, or washed down a stream? Discover what makes you special in the world of geology!

Friday - Envision yourself in the wild with nature as your toolbox! How would you use sticks, leaves, or other natural materials to build something amazing? Unleash your inner wilderness architect and show us what you’d create to thrive in the great outdoors!

Kids ages 2-4 can bring their favorite grown up to sing songs, dance, and learn about nature together. We'll spend time making and moving to music based on a nature theme and go outside for a walk to explore it outdoors.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities - VolunteerOpportunities

Volunteer with us every 3rd Saturday of the month!

Non-native pine trees are commonly found in many parks due to their previous commercial use. While not as harmful as other invasive species, non-native pines can encroach on native plant communities, so removal is a beneficial practice. Volunteers will work to remove small non-native pines with loppers and hand saws. All equipment and training will be provided.

What to wear: Warm winter gear, appropriate for off-trail work in possibly snowy conditions.
What to bring: Water bottle if desired
